Pre-College Programs - University of Maryland

Summer Academy Program Description

LIFT summer academy provide a unique opportunity for students entering grades 10-12 to hone their math, reading, and writing skills while preparing for college through an on-campus living experience, college career counseling seminars, and cultural and social enrichment activities!

Students will prepare for college through:

Academic Instruction and SAT Practice
With 8-10 students per class, students will get the instruction and individual attention they need! Our courses will intergrate SAT prep into the lessons and give students the skills they need to be successful in college. Students will enroll in Geometry, Alegbra II, or Pre-Calculus and have the opportunity to get ahead for the coming school year! They will also take reading and writing courses, and get help writing a college admissions essay!

College Career Counseling Seminars
These seminars will assist students in selecting and applying to colleges and exploring career opportunities. Guest speakers from various professions and from UMD Financial Aid and Admissions office will present to students and be available to answer questions!

An Introduction to College Experience Course (ICE)
Students will learn study skills, time management, and explore other issues relevant to college students!

College Living Experience
Students will learn to live with a roommate, participate in social activities with students in the program, and reside with a Tutor-Counselor (an upperclass undergraduate or graduate student) who can help them adjust to campus life!
Students participate in an ARTS Alive activity of their choice (examples of past ARTS alive workshops include African drumming, Salsa dancing, ballroom dancing, graphic arts and design) and prepare for an end of summer performance!

Application process begins February 2010
