Summer Academy Frequently Asked Questions
Application Process
What are the dates for the summer program?
The program will run from June 21, 2009 – July 31, 2009.
How much does the program cost?
If you to take part in the six-week session, the price is $4,000. Students that wish to commute will be charged $2,500.
When are applications due?
Applications are due May 1, 2009.
Is financial aid available?
Unfortunately, no scholarships are available for the program; however, payment plans can be established on a case-by-case basis. ALL FINAL payments are due by June 21, 2009.
Eligibility
Who qualifies for the LIFT summer program?
Any rising 10th-12th grader is eligible.
Is my 9th grader eligible?
Rising 9th graders are eligible only if they will be taking geometry in the fall when they enter high school.
Do you have to be affiliated with the University of Maryland to apply?
The parent/child does not have to be affiliated with the University in any way to participate in the LIFT summer program.
My 12th grader will be graduating in June, is this program good for him/her?
If your child will be attending a four-year institution in the fall, we recommend participation in the pre-college program designed to help graduating seniors transition into college called the Summer Institute for Bridge Students (SIBS). (Link)
If my child is out of the country during the start of the program is he/she still eligible?
Any time missed from the program will be reviewed on a "case by case" basis.
Will this program help my child gain admissions to the University of Maryland?
While this program is affiliated with the University, admissions to the University of Maryland in any way is NOT granted through this program.
Living on campus
Does my child have to stay on campus?
There is a commuter option available to students for a price of $2,500. Students will arrive on campus for their morning classes and participate in sociocultural activities as well. Lunch is included with the commuter option.
Who will be supervising my child?
Undergraduate seniors, and graduate students will provide supervision at all times to students on campus, as well as in the residence hall.
Will my child stay on campus the entire 6 weeks?
Students will have to go home on the weekends. Check-out time is Friday at 4pm. Check-in time is 5pm on Sunday. At NO point in the program will students stay at the University on weekends.
What does a typical day consist of?
The day begins at 7am and ends at 10pm. Here is a sample schedule.
Courses
What courses would my child be taking?
Students will be taking geometry, algebra II, or pre-calculus according to their grade level. Students will also take reading and writing courses and college admissions seminars to aid the admissions process.
Is SAT prep a component of the program?
SAT prep will be incorporated into the subjects learned however there will NOT be separate academic component dedicated to SAT preparation.
Can my child earn academic credit?
Academic credit is offered through the student’s personal high school if permitted.
Fun activities
Will my child participate in any fun activities?
Students will participate in the Arts Alive program, run under the University where they will learn different art techniques from a background of their liking. There may be trips to amusements parks as well.
