The Summer Institute for Bridge Students (SIBS) Description

Who is eligible?
LIFT students who will be chosen as SIBS must have:

  1. Graduated from a secondary school and have been accepted to a University/College for the fall semester
  2. Are identified as responsible and as having demonstrated leadership qualities
  3. Met all program obligations

What is included?
The first three weeks will prepare students to successfully complete a college course. The students will enroll in a UNIV 100 course for 1 university credit, in which they will learn study skills, time management, and other skills to foster academic development. The course will be three to four hours a day for four days per week, and will be instructed by a University of Maryland staff member.

In an effort to foster the leadership of the participants, during the first three weeks students will also participate in a Leadership Seminar taught by a Pre-College Program Staff Member or University of Maryland staff member. The seminar will teach students how to conduct oral presentations and utilizing technology like power point for making presentations, how to work in groups, how to register for college courses, and other skills for success. The students will discuss and learn strategies for overcoming social, cultural, and economic barriers that often limit college success. Students will learn these skills through assigned readings, presentations from guest speakers, and by presenting information, on topics related to the learning communities, to the high school students in the program.  Beyond the leadership seminars, the SIBS will serve as mentors and leaders for the high school participants.

During the second three weeks students will participate in a "Intensive summer study" in which they will complete one of three University of Maryland introductory courses: Sociology 105 (Introduction to Contemporary Social Problems), Philosophy 170(Introduction to Logic), or Art 100 (Introduction to two-dimensional design) which are offered for three-weeks during the second half of the summer session one.  Credits may be transferred to other institutions but it is the responsibility of the student to make the necessary arrangements.  Please note that if the student is dismissed from the program for inappropriate behavior, all fees will be reimbursed by the parent/guardian.

Your Pre-College Programs fee will cover the cost of summer tuition, fees, books, room and board, and most educational field trips.  Students participating in the SIBS program will be given duties to assist summer residential staff; participants will be known as junior tutor counselors.  Duties may include conducting floor checks, student monitoring, student escorting, front desk duty, as well as other duties assigned.

Throughout the six-week summer academy the SIBS will also participate in cultural and recreational activities, such as he ARTS Alive program* with the other Pre-College Program summer participants.

The ARTS Alive program will bring artists to the Pre-College Programs to provide summer participants the opportunity to learn a form of art.  Arts ALIVE is a five-week project in which artists will provide instruction for a total of ten hours of instruction that will culminate in a joint student-artist exhibition (visual arts) and performance (performing arts) at the conclusion of the summer program.  Some of the proposed artist will be skilled in: capoeira – a Brazilian blend of art and dance, African dance, African drumming, theatre, painting, and drawing.

Application process begins February 2010
